Cinnamon Roll: A Gourmand Scent That Isn’t Trying Too Hard
Cinnamon Roll is one of three scents in our Nostalgic Fall collection, a set Tram spent nearly a year developing after falling in love with a season she didn’t grow up with. She wanted each scent to feel familiar, but elevated, not just a stack of fall clichés poured into a jar. If you want the full story behind the collection, we’ve shared it here. This post is about one scent specifically, and the slightly unusual way we got there.
Why We Went to New York for a Candle
Before we created this scent, we went to NYC and tasted our way through several award-winning cinnamon roll shops, looking for the version that captured exactly what we wanted this fragrance to feel like. Not the fastest way to develop a candle. Probably not the most efficient either. But we kept coming back to the same conclusion: the classic cinnamon roll, soft and buttery, with warm cinnamon filling tucked between every layer of dough, and just enough icing melting into the folds on top.
Most gourmand candles skip that research and go straight for sweet. Ours didn’t. We wanted the real thing as a reference point, not a candy-shop version of it.
Never Overly Sweet, On Purpose
A lot of bakery-style candles lean hard into sugar, to the point where they smell more like frosting from a can than an actual cinnamon roll. That wasn’t the goal here. Our Cinnamon Roll is never overly sweet.
Instead, we focused on balance: the buttery richness of freshly baked dough, the warmth of cinnamon filling, and just enough creamy vanilla icing to soften every layer without taking over.
Warm, buttery, nostalgic, and comforting, without crossing into cloying. That was the whole point of the New York trip in the first place, figuring out where that line actually sits.
Where It Fits in the Collection
Each of the three Nostalgic Fall scents captures a different part of the season. Honeycrisp Apple is bright and fresh, the first sign that fall has arrived. Fig & Patchouli is deep and moody, built for the quieter days once the season has settled in. Cinnamon Roll sits in the middle, warm and bakery-driven, the equivalent of walking into a kitchen where something’s just come out of the oven.
That was intentional. The collection moves through fall the way the season actually unfolds, not just three different ways of saying “pumpkin spice.”
The Scent, Broken Down
Cinnamon leaf gives this candle its core warmth, sharper and more natural than a generic “cinnamon” note. Underneath it, CO2 coffee extract adds depth and a slightly roasted richness, which is part of what keeps this from reading as sugary. It’s not an ingredient people expect in a cinnamon roll candle, but it’s a big part of why this one feels rich instead of sweet.
Rounding things out, a natural isolate called benzyl benzoate helps carry and soften the other notes, coumarin from cassia bark adds a warm, slightly powdery depth, and vanilla ties the whole thing together the way icing ties together an actual cinnamon roll. Together, they build something that smells baked and comforting without smelling like dessert.
What to Expect from the Throw
We’ll be upfront about this part too. Cinnamon Roll has a light to medium scent throw. Every aromatic ingredient here is a plant-derived oil, absolute, extract, or natural isolate, not a synthetic fragrance load, so the scent comes through naturally rather than filling a room the second you walk in.
If you’re looking for a very strong, perfume-like candle, this isn’t built to do that. If you want a scent that feels genuinely baked rather than artificially sweet, this is exactly the kind of candle we make.
What’s Actually in It
Cinnamon Roll is beeswax blended with coconut oil, scented with cinnamon leaf, CO2 coffee extract, benzyl benzoate, coumarin from cassia bark, and vanilla. It burns for 90+ hours in our 15oz jar.
The beeswax itself varies slightly in shade depending on the season it was harvested, so no two candles look quite the same.
Once the candle is finished, the jar is built to be reused, especially with a refill from our Eco Candle Making Kit. And with every purchase, we plant a tree.
Where to Burn It
Cinnamon Roll works well somewhere you actually spend time, a kitchen, a living room, anywhere you’d want the warmth of it to settle in rather than just pass through. Because the throw is light to medium, it reads best in a space you’re sitting in for a while, not one you’re just walking past.
Lit on a slow weekend morning, it’s less a statement scent and more the kind of background warmth that makes a room feel a little more lived-in.
Why the NYC Trip Actually Mattered
We could have built a cinnamon roll candle from a fragrance catalog and called it a day. We didn’t, because we wanted the reference point to be something real, not somebody else’s idea of what cinnamon roll should smell like.
That’s a slower way to do this, and a more expensive one. We think it’s the reason this doesn’t smell like every other bakery candle on a shelf.

Cinnamon Roll launches with the rest of the Nostalgic Fall collection, September 12 at 8 AM. Each scent is made in a limited batch, so once it’s live, it’s genuinely first come, first served.
