Fig & Patchouli: A Dark, Earthy Fall Candle Scent Beyond Pumpkin and Spice

Fig & Patchouli is one of three scents in our Nostalgic Fall collection, a set Living Good Candle Co. spent nearly a year developing after falling in love with the fall season. If you want the full story behind the collection, we’ve shared it here. This post is about one scent specifically, and the fragrance it almost was instead.

The Scent We Almost Made With Musk

When we first started developing this fragrance, we wanted fig to be the main character, but we also wanted something deeper underneath it, a moodier base that felt grounded and right for fall. Musk was the obvious way to get there. It’s what most fragrances reach for when they want that kind of depth.

We didn’t use it. We couldn’t find a plant-based alternative to synthetic musk that actually aligned with the direction we wanted, so instead of forcing it, we set that idea aside. That’s a slower way to develop a fragrance. It would have been easier to just use a synthetic musk blend and move on to the next scent. We didn’t think that tradeoff was worth it.

Around the same time, one of our customers had been asking us, repeatedly, to make a patchouli scent. So we tried it. It changed the entire fragrance, in the best way. The fig stayed present, but the patchouli brought in a woodiness and an earthy richness that musk never would have given us. What we ended up with wasn’t a compromise. It was better than the version we’d originally planned, and we wouldn’t have gotten there without a customer who kept asking for something we hadn’t thought to make ourselves.

Where It Fits in the Collection

Each of the three Nostalgic Fall scents captures a different part of the season. Honeycrisp Apple is bright and fresh, the first sign fall has arrived. Cinnamon Roll is warm and bakery-driven, the middle of the season settling in. Fig & Patchouli comes last in that arc: the quieter, cooler days once fall has fully arrived, when everything starts to feel a little more grounded.

That progression was intentional. The collection moves through the season the way it actually unfolds, rather than picking one mood and repeating it three times with different names. This is the scent for when fall has stopped announcing itself and just settled in, the point in the season where you stop noticing the leaves changing because it’s just how things look now.

The Scent, Broken Down

There’s no literal fig oil in this candle, similar to how Honeycrisp Apple doesn’t actually contain apples. The fresh, green fig-leaf opening comes from cornmint, spearmint, and citronella working together, herbaceous and slightly sharp at first, the way a fig leaf smells before the fruit itself comes to mind.

As the candle settles, cedarwood, cedar leaf, patchouli, and wintergreen take over, building the deep, earthy, woodsy base the fragrance is really built around. Cinnamon leaf and vanilla sit underneath both halves, warming the transition so it doesn’t feel like two separate scents stacked together. The result opens green and leafy, then settles into something dark, grounded, and a little moody, which is exactly what Living Good Candle Co. was after patchouli entered the picture.

What to Expect from the Throw

Same as the other two scents in this collection, we’ll be upfront here. Fig & Patchouli has a little to medium scent throw. Every aromatic ingredient is a plant-based oil or natural isolate, not a synthetic fragrance load, so it comes through gradually rather than announcing itself the moment you walk in. If you want a very strong, perfume-like candle, this isn’t built for that. If you want something moody and present without being overwhelming, this is exactly the kind of candle we make.

What’s Actually in It

Fig & Patchouli is beeswax blended with coconut oil, scented with cedarwood, cinnamon leaf, cornmint, citronella, spearmint, cedar leaf, wintergreen, patchouli, and vanilla. It burns for 90+ hours in our 15 oz jar.

The beeswax itself varies slightly in shade depending on the season it was harvested, so no two candles look quite the same. Once the candle is finished, the jar is built to be reused, especially with a refill from our Eco Candle Making Kit. And with every purchase, we plant a tree.

Where to Burn It

This one earns its keep in the evening. A living room, a bedroom, anywhere you’re winding down rather than moving through quickly. Because the throw is light to medium and the scent itself is moodier and deeper, it reads best in a room you’re actually sitting in, somewhere it has time to settle rather than just pass through.

Why We’re Telling You This

We could have just told you this smells like fig and patchouli and left it there. We’d rather you know it almost didn’t turn out this way at all, that it exists because we turned down a shortcut and a customer wouldn’t stop asking for something we hadn’t planned to make. That’s a more honest version of how this scent actually came together, and it’s the kind of thing we’d rather tell you than leave out. It’s also, honestly, our favorite kind of story: the plan changes, someone who isn’t us turns out to be right, and the result is better than what we started with.
