Honeycrisp Apple: Fall’s First Real Bite

Honeycrisp Apple is one of the three scents in our Nostalgic Fall collection, a set Living Good Candle Co. spent nearly a year developing after falling in love with a season she didn’t grow up with. She wanted these scents to feel familiar, but also open the door to something new. Honeycrisp Apple is a good example of what that actually means in practice. If you want the full story behind the collection, we’ve shared it here. This post is about one scent specifically, and why it smells the way it does.

Not the Apple Candle You’re Expecting

Most fall apple candles reach straight for cinnamon. Think baked apple pie, mulled cider, warm spice stacked on top of fruit until the apple itself is almost an afterthought. Honeycrisp Apple doesn’t do that. Unlike the typical cinnamon-apple fall scent, this one is all about the fresh, tart, juicy bite of a true red apple.

It’s meant to evoke the first cool days of fall: crisp air, apple picking at the orchard, red apples gathered in paper bags. Bright, tart, juicy, and refreshing, closer to biting into the apple itself than to a baked dessert.

There’s a specific kind of morning this scent is chasing, the first one where you actually reach for a sweater without thinking twice, when the air outside finally has the edge to it after months of heat. If Cinnamon Roll and Fig & Patchouli are about the deeper, cozier parts of the season, Honeycrisp Apple is about the moment fall first arrives, before the air turns cold, when it’s still just a little crisp.

Where It Fits in the Collection

Each of the three Nostalgic Fall scents captures a different part of the season. Cinnamon Roll is warm and bakery-driven, built around a real cinnamon roll research trip through New York City. Fig & Patchouli is deep, woodsy, and moody, made for the quieter, cooler days once fall has settled in. Honeycrisp Apple sits at the start of that arc. It’s the first sign that the season is turning, still bright and fresh rather than heavy.

That was intentional. The collection was built to move through fall the way the season actually unfolds, not just stack every “fall” cliché into one scent.

The Scent, Broken Down

There’s no literal apple ingredient in this candle. The crisp, juicy apple character actually comes from how lemon, citronella, and jasmine work together.

Lemon brings the initial brightness, the first thing you notice when the candle is lit. Citronella follows with a green, slightly tart edge that keeps the scent from reading as purely citrus or too sweet. Jasmine sits underneath both, rounding the edges out so the whole thing feels layered instead of sharp.

As the candle burns, that combination settles into something that reads unmistakably as apple, tart and orchard-fresh, without a single drop of actual apple in the bottle. That’s more the norm in candle-making than people usually realize, and we’d rather tell you how it works than let you assume there’s fruit extract involved.

What to Expect from the Throw

We’ll be upfront about this part too. Honeycrisp Apple has a light to medium scent throw. Every aromatic ingredient is a plant-derived oil, absolute, extract, or natural isolate, not a synthetic fragrance load, so the scent comes through naturally rather than announcing itself the moment you walk in the room.

If you’re looking for a very strong, perfume-like candle that fills a large space instantly, this isn’t built to do that. If you want a scent that’s present without being overwhelming, this is exactly the kind of candle we make.

What’s Actually in It

Honeycrisp Apple is beeswax blended with coconut oil, scented with lemon, citronella, and jasmine. It burns for 90+ hours in our 15oz jar.

The beeswax itself varies slightly in shade depending on the season it was harvested, so the color of your candle won’t be identical to the next person’s. We consider that a feature, not an inconsistency, no two candles look quite the same.

Once the candle is finished, the jar is built to be reused, especially with a refill from our Eco Candle Making Kit. And with every purchase, we plant a tree.

Where to Burn It

Honeycrisp Apple works well somewhere you’ll notice it in passing rather than sit with directly, an entryway, a kitchen counter, a hallway. Because the throw is light to a medium, it tends to read best in smaller or more transitional spaces rather than a larger open room where a stronger scent would have more air to fill.

Lit while you’re cooking or getting ready in the morning, it’s more of a bright, quiet backdrop than a statement scent, which is exactly the role it’s meant to play.

Why We Tell You There’s No Apple in It

We could have left out the details about lemon, citronella, and jasmine building the apple character, and most people would never have asked. We’d rather you know anyway.

Part of what we’re building at Living Good Candle Co. is a habit of just telling people what’s actually in the jar, even the parts that are more interesting explained than left a mystery. If that means occasionally telling you a candle doesn’t contain the fruit its name suggests, that is a trade we’re glad to make.
