Breathe Easy: Beeswax Candles for Clean Air
When you light a candle at the end of a long day, you're doing more than setting a mood. You're adding something to the air in your room. That's worth understanding clearly, not just being told what sounds good.
You may have come across the idea that beeswax candles "purify the air." We want to be straightforward with you: that claim hasn't been scientifically proven, and we're not going to make it. What we can tell you, honestly, is what actually happens when you burn beeswax instead of paraffin.
The Real Difference: Soot and Smoke
Many mass-produced candles use paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum refining. When burned, paraffin releases compounds like benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde, along with visible soot. That soot is the black residue you sometimes see collecting near a candle or staining a jar.
Beeswax burns differently. It produces far fewer of the byproducts paraffin does, and noticeably less soot. That's a real, measurable difference in what ends up in your room, not a claim about "purifying" anuthing. It's simply cleaner combustion.
Add in synthetic fragrance oils on top of paraffin, and you’re exposing your home to phthalates and other chemical binders. That's a separate issue from the wax itself, but it compounds the problem in a lot of conventional candles.
What Makes Beeswax Different?
Unlike paraffin, beeswax is a natural byproduct of honeybees. It doesn’t need to be hydrogenated, chemically processed, or bleached. When we scent our candles, we use Plant Based Oils, not synthetic fragrance.
We'll be honest here too: not every Living Good candle is 100% pure beeswax. Our Bare Beeswax candle is beeswax blended with a small amount of non-GMO coconut oil, which helps it burn more smoothly and evenly. If you want the fuller picture of pure beeswax versus blends and what to actually look for, we've written a whole buying guide on exactly that.
Why Clean-Burning Candles Matter for Everyday Comfort
Your home should feel like a place you can relax, not a source of things you'd rather not think about. Choosing a cleaner-burning candle means less soot, less smoke, and fewer of the byproducts that come with burning paraffin and synthetic fragrance.
This matters more for some households rather than others. If you have young kids, older pets, or anyone sensitive to smoke and strong scents, a cleaner-burning candle is a small, reasonable thing to switch to.
The Emotional and Mental Benefits of Cleaner Air
Most people choose candle for how it smells or how it makes a room feel. That's a completely valid reason on its own. We're not going to claim our candles will change your mood or your health. .What we can say is that a lot of our customers tell us that they like burning our candles in the evening, as part of winding down, and we think that's reason enough.
Is It Safe for My Family and Pets?
Short answer: this is exactly the question we wrote a full, honest article to answer. Rather than repeat it here, read Are Beeswax Candles Safe?, where we go through pets, allergies, and what's actually in our candles in detail.
When it comes to taking the first step in buying your first beeswax candles, but don't know where to start, we've written a full, honest breakdown of what to actually look for when buying a beeswax cane, including the pure-versus-blended question, in our Beeswax Candle Buying Guide.
